Maryland School for Jewish Education

Curriculum

 

This curriculum works on the idea that learning should be a sequential experience. Tuned by grade, material is introduced sequentially to develop a knowledge base about Jewish religious belief and practice, culture, history, and Hebrew. In the process of understanding, interpreting, and challenging the materials, Jewish identity and commitment will be enhanced

 

K/1

 

  • Hebrew:  Introduction to letters and vowels.  Focus is on letter and vowel recognition.  Textbook:  “Kadimah”
  • Introduction to the Jewish Holidays.   Textbook:   “Let’s Discover the Holidays”
  • Introduction to Basic Judaism.  Textbook:  “Let’s Explore Being Jewish”

 

 

2nd Grade

 

  • Hebrew: Continue letter and vowel recognition.  Beginning to decode Hebrew words.  Textbook: “Shalom Alef Bet!”
  • The practice of Mitzvot is introduced.  Students will learn about giving, sharing with the world, and commandments from the Torah.  Textbook:  “Let’s Discover Mitzvot"
  • Introduction to the Bible.  Textbook:  “Let’s Discover the Bible”
  • Introduction to Blessings and the concept of God.  Textbook:  “Let’s Discover God”



3rd Grade

 

  • Hebrew: Continue letter and vowel recognition.  Learn concepts through Hebrew words.  Introduced to look alike letters and different sounds of those letters.  Textbook: “Shalom Uvrachah”
  • Bible Studies Part I:  Students will learn lessons through Bible Studies.  Textbook:  “A Child’s Bible: Lessons from the Torah”
  • Introduction to Israel Part I.  Textbook:  “The Israel Scavenger Hunt”
  • Continue studies about Jewish Holidays.  Textbook:  “My Jewish Year”

 

 

 

4th Grade

 

  • Hebrew: Focus will be to have students read more fluently.  Reinforce look alike letters and different sounds of those letters.  Hints on how to decipher letters.  Textbook: “The Hebrew Primer”
  • Jewish Lifecycle is studied.  Textbook: “Journey of a Lifetime”
  • Bible Studies Part II:  Students will learn lessons through Bible Studies.  Textbook:  “A Child’s Bible: Lessons from the Prophets and Writings”
  • Continue studies about Jewish Holidays.  Textbook:  “The Book of Jewish Holidays”

 

5th Grade

 

  • Hebrew: Focus will be on learning prayers.  Textbook: “Hineni 1” (first book in a series)
  • Israel Part II – second phase of learning about Israel.  Textbook:  “Welcome to Israel”
  • Continue studies about Jewish Holidays.  Textbook:  “The Book of Jewish Holidays”

 

6th Grade

 

  • Hebrew:  Continue studies.  Textbook: “Hineni 2”
  • Bible Studies:  Jewish wisdom in action.  Bible studies through Rabbis’ opinions.  Textbook:  “The Rabbi’s Bible”
  • Jewish Holidays will be incorporated with all other lessons.

 

7th Grade

 

  • Hebrew:  Continue studies.  Students will learn prayers that are applicable to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah services.  Textbook: “Hineni 3”
  • Jewish Values and Ethics.
  • Introduction to the Holocaust.
  • Torah portions of the week will be studied.
  • Jewish Holidays will be incorporated with all other lessons.
  • Parent-Student workshop to prepare for B’nai Mitzvah.  Textbook:  “The Bar and Bat Mitzvah Manual”
